Payments inside Android and iOS apps

Updated 5 September 2026 · ~6 min read

Why Razorpay or external billing is not always allowed inside mobile apps for digital courses — Apple and Google store billing rules explained.

What this means for you

You own course prices, refunds, taxes, KYC and chargebacks for your business. Whether Razorpay (or another external gateway) can appear inside Android/iOS apps depends on current Apple and Google billing rules.

Digital courses and subscriptions often must use store billing (In-App Purchase / Play Billing). Marketplace commissions and disclosure rules may apply. That is store policy — not LMS White preferring one gateway.

Why external gateways are restricted in many app purchases

Apple and Google treat many digital goods sold inside apps as purchases that must go through their commerce systems. Education content sold as an in-app digital product frequently falls under those rules. Web checkout or external payment for digital content may be limited or require specific disclosures depending on region and current policy.

LMS White implements what the stores allow for your use case. We cannot promise “Razorpay inside the iOS app for digital courses” if Apple’s rules for that category require IAP.

Examples

  • Selling a recorded digital course unlock inside the iOS app → often requires Apple In-App Purchase.
  • Collecting fees for offline classroom seats via a website → may use Razorpay on the web, depending on how you sell.
  • Store commission (commonly discussed around 15–30% tiers historically) is charged by Apple/Google when store billing applies — not by LMS White as a hidden platform cut on top.

What LMS White controls: integrating payment flows that comply with the stores and your Order Form.

What LMS White does not control: Apple’s and Google’s billing mandates, commission schedules, or regional exceptions. Those change over time; we follow the live rules.
